Like many leaders, I used to believe strong teams avoided mistakes and kept things running smoothly. Less friction, fewer problems, sounds good, right? Then I came across a study by Amy Edmondson, and it flipped my perspective.
She found that the best teams actually reported more mistakes. Not because they failed more, but because they felt safe enough to admit them. And when teams feel safe speaking up, they solve problems faster, innovate bigger, and perform at a higher level. That starts with leadership, how we handle mistakes, encourage real conversations, and create space for bold ideas.
That was my lightbulb moment. The strongest teams don’t tiptoe around challenges, they tackle them head-on. They speak up, push boundaries, and turn friction into fuel for growth. And as a leader, it’s my job to create the space for them to do it. Here’s how I do it…
